Albanian Apostolic Church was official autocephalous church concerning Caucasian Albanian Kingdom. But it was reduced to status of diocese during reign of Arab caliph Abd-al-Malik upon request of Armenian patriarch Elias I (703–717) [Եղիա Ա Արճիզեցի]. Because Albanian catholicos Nerses converted to ‘orthodoxy’ from ‘miaphysite’. Which was a threat for Arabs, because it meant they would be pro-Byzantium. Archbishop of Albania was still styled as ‘katoghikos’ under Armenian Church. Which causes other misconception that Albanian catholicos was still independent. But indeed, it was just a historical title. Wonder why there was no Albanian inscription on ‘Albanian’ or ‘Udi’ churches? Because they were under Armenian church hierarchy. That’s why, it is really hard to find out if original character of these churches across Karabakh and Albania. Even Nij church had Armenian inscriptions and Udins used Armenian alphabet, not because they were Armenians but because they were of Armenian creed. A church does not become ‘Armenian’ or ‘Russian’ even if it is built by Armenians or Russians. A church is ‘Armenian’, if it belongs to ‘Armenian Apostolic Church’. Therefore, it’s hard to say which one was originally Albanian or not since Albanian Church does not exist any more.
